NYC Cyber Command is a centralized organization created by executive order to lead New York City's cyber defense efforts, working across city government to prevent, detect, respond, and recover from cyber threats.

Overview

Faced with growing cyber threats and the operational complexity of protecting city-wide infrastructure, NYC Cyber Command sought to modernize its approach. It needed a scalable, secure cloud platform to support its cloud-first, zero-trust strategy, deliver real-time data processing, and onboard 100+ agencies efficiently. Google Cloud offered the infrastructure, security model, and analytics capabilities to make that possible.

The Challenge

The Solution

NYC Cyber Command built a resilient, secure, and scalable data pipeline using:

  • Cloud Pub/Sub & Cloud Dataflow for high-throughput, serverless log ingestion and event formatting

  • BigQuery for ultra-fast, large-scale batch and streaming data analytics using SQL

  • Cloud IAM & Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) for fine-grained access control and zero-trust security

  • Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) and Cloud Functions for flexible and highly available applications

  • Cloud-first architecture and infrastructure-as-code tooling for operational consistency

Summary

NYC Cyber Command transformed its security operations by leveraging Google Cloud to build a high-performance, cloud-native cybersecurity platform. It now processes and analyzes threats 10x faster, supports near-infinite scalability, and empowers a small team to defend one of the world’s most complex urban environments.
