Land Transport Authority: Collecting travel data securely at scale and with ease to improve transport planning with Google Cloud

7x higher survey response rate vs. manual methods

Over 50% cost savings, cutting $6.5M to $2.8M

Stronger data security and fraud detection

Real-time insights improved data quality

Overview

To enhance the reliability and efficiency of Singapore's public transport system, LTA sought to modernize its data collection methods. Traditionally reliant on in-person, door-to-door surveys conducted every four to five years, LTA aimed to digitize its Household Travel Survey to gather real-time insights into commuter behavior, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical interactions were limited.

The Challenge

  • Inefficiencies and high costs associated with traditional, manual survey methods.

  • Limited reach and engagement with diverse commuter demographics.

  • Need for real-time data collection and analysis to inform transport planning.

  • Ensuring data security and integrity in digital platforms.

The Solution

  • Deployed the digital Household Travel Survey on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) for scalable and efficient operations.

  • Utilized Cloud SQL and Cloud Storage to securely manage over one million survey responses and assets.

  • Implemented Looker Studio for real-time data visualization and reporting, enabling dynamic adjustments to survey strategies.

  • Enhanced security measures using Cloud IAM and Cloud Armor to protect against vulnerabilities.

  • Collaborated with Google Cloud partner Affle for survey design, user experience optimization, and data analysis.

Summary

By transitioning to a digital survey platform powered by Google Cloud, the Land Transport Authority significantly improved the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and inclusivity of its data collection processes. The integration of scalable cloud services and real-time analytics tools enabled LTA to gather comprehensive insights into commuter behaviors, informing future transport planning and policy decisions.
